Development as a Trade Center Due to its strategic location along the Pacific Coast, Long Beach developed as a major source for trade and commerce in the late 1800s. After being officially incorporated as a town in 1888, it went on to quickly expand into the fastest-growing city in the U.S. around the turn of the 20th century.
Major Earthquakes Long Beach’s rapid growth came to a halt in 1933 when a major earthquake destroyed infrastructure throughout the city. After being rebuilt in an Art Deco style, the city sprang back into action and resumed major financial growth into the 1940s. During this decade, the city also became a retreat for soldiers returning from active duty overseas.
Downtown Expansion Following the war, growth downtown stagnated as servicemen and fellow residents relocated to the suburbs. In order to draw tourists and residents back to the downtown area, the city purchased the historic Queen Mary and began a revitalization of the city.
Construction of the Aquarium Residents today can visit the Aquarium of the Pacific. The second most popular attraction in Southern California, the aquarium was constructed in 1998 and has played a monumental role in drawing in visitors to the city.
